Security Advisory

Beware of Unregulated Operators

There are no implemented controls over who can operate selling trekking and climbing services in Huaraz. Many operators compete on price rather than safety, using unlicensed staff or porters as guides. We urge you to verify the credentials of any agency you choose.

How to verify your operator:

  • Is the agency a legal entity and licensed Tourism Operator?
  • Are they registered with the Peruvian Taxation Authority (SUNAT)?
  • Are the mountaineering guides UIAGM / IFMGA certified?
Industry Press Report

"...they are at the mercy of unregulated local mountaineering agencies that typically compete on price rather than safety. I have seen plenty of what I would call grossly inept guides... clients should ensure that their guides have a current credential from the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations..."
